Board 8: Pipes to the World
The Hume pipe firm was the only Australian company of the pre-World War II period to pioneer a new technology and to export its innovations throughout the world. This involved the sale of patent rights to companies in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa and the islands of the Pacific; and also included the export of specialised machinery which was produced in the firm’s own engineering workshops.
Humes concrete pipe was a revolutionary advancement, which gave the world a new means of constructing water supply, sewerage and drainage systems – on which civilisation as we know it, has depended.
