Board 7: Pipemakers, Maribyrnong
During the 1950’ to 1970’s, the workers at the Hume Pipe Factory were from many different nationalities – Italian, Yugoslav, Maltese, Dutch and Australian. At peak times, the works employed about 200 people. They worked on ten hour day or night shifts and also did overtime up to sixteen hours. The work was hard and noisy. Each worker at the Maribyrnong factory had to reach a target production figure by the end of the day. Then some of the men went fishing, eeling, rabbiting or mushrooming. On the work site.
