The Story of Newmarket Saleyards

Board 13: Images of Kensington Banks

There is a lovely walk along the original cobblestones following the path of the sheep and cattle so many years ago. They would walk along this trail, sheltered by Peppercorn trees, along to the City Abbatoirs and the Angliss Meatworks on the banks of the Maribyrnong River.

The walk starts in Youlden street, at the top of the hill near the school, and continues for quite some distance through the housing estate. It is one of the nicest urban heritage walks in Melbourne. Along the way, under Epsom Road are mosaic images of the sheep and cattle that once passed this way by mosaic artist Elizabeth McKinnon.
